Chestnut Hill Baptist Church

5225 Fort Avenue, Lynchburg VA

On my journey to visit every church in my city, a journey I’ve embarked on with guidance from the Holy Spirit, I arrived today at Chestnut Hill Baptist Church.

This visit was particularly meaningful as it marked the 34th church I’ve stepped into during this spiritual adventure.

The moment I walked through the doors of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church, I felt an overwhelming sense of welcome and love, a feeling that this was a place of hope and deep commitment to the community.

The welcome I received was heartwarming.

Gracelyn Hedrick, the Worship Leader, greeted me with a bright, friendly smile and a firm handshake. She shared with enthusiasm about her role in the church and talked about some new and exciting things they were planning to introduce soon. Her warmth and kindness made me feel right at home.

As I mingled with other members of the church, each person took the time to chat, making me feel even more welcome.

They happily agreed to take photos for my article, adding to the sense of community and fellowship.

Recognizing familiar faces like Phillip Johnson, known for his amazing cake decorating and baking, and his mother Janet, made the experience even more special and personal.

The beauty of the church’s interior struck me as I walked around, taking photos of the stunning sanctuary and the intricate stained glass windows.

I realized that although I have passed by this church thousands of times in my life, I had never known how beautiful it is inside.

Senior Pastor Ian McManamey introduced himself with a warm welcome and handed me a visitor card, making me feel recognized and valued.

He took time to listen to my story about visiting different churches and expressed genuine interest and excitement that his church was part of my journey.

One thing that stood out to me was the church’s approach to involving its members. Beside the church bulletins, they had a sheet for song requests, showing that they truly care about what their congregation wants to sing.

Another thoughtful touch was a sheet in the bulletin asking if members had read the entire Bible in 2023, encouraging them to share this achievement for recognition and celebration.

Chestnut Hill Baptist Church operates on the belief that every member is a minister, and this was evident in the kindness and friendliness of everyone I met.

Their community work truly moved me. In January, they are collecting hats, gloves, and scarves for the homeless, visiting sick people in hospitals and at home, supporting the Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center and Meals on Wheels.

This deep involvement in the community is a beautiful reflection of their faith in action.

The worship team, led by Gracelyn and including Phillip, was a joy to listen to.

They led us in hymns like “Another Year Is Dawning” and “O God, Our Help in Ages Past,” creating a worshipful atmosphere with their beautiful music.

The Pastor’s leadership in prayer and his approachable manner during the announcements added to the warm atmosphere. His prayer before and during the sermon brought a sense of peace and reverence.

Celebrating the first Sunday of the year with Chestnut Hill Baptist Church was a true blessing.

Pastor Ian’s sermon, titled “Where do we begin,” used Genesis 1:1-3 to discuss God’s presence at the beginning of everything, His role as the creator, and the purpose He gives to everything.

His down-to-earth preaching style, filled with relatable stories and references, made the message resonate on a personal level.

Throughout the service, there was a quiet reverence and a focus on Jesus.

Pastor Ian’s emphasis was on keeping our attention on Jesus in all aspects of life, reminding us to start and finish everything with Him as our foundation.

My visit to Chestnut Hill Baptist Church was deeply moving.

The sense of community, the spirit of genuine worship, and the focus on Jesus left a lasting impression on my heart.

I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this church. You’ll find a loving community where you’re immediately made to feel like part of the family, and where the gospel is shared with open hearts and open arms.
