Gethsemane Baptist Church

411 Blue Ridge Street, Lynchburg VA

Continuing my journey to explore Lynchburg’s diverse churches, the Holy Spirit led me to Gethsemane Baptist Church, marking my 43rd stop on this spiritual quest.

Little did I know that this chapter would unfold into a heartwarming experience, surpassing my expectations and forging a deeper connection to my spiritual adventure.

Upon entering with my daughter, Pastor Carlton Duck and a welcoming team of church members greeted us with warm handshakes and friendly smiles, creating an atmosphere that felt like joining an extended family that genuinely cared. The Pastor even commented on my daughter’s beautiful red hair, which made her smile.

The church featured a daily bulletin named “Duck Notes,” providing notes for the sermon and information about upcoming events.

What caught my attention was the church’s commitment to helping others.

They are currently collecting items for donation to The Salvation Army and Miriam’s House, showcasing their dedication to community support. Last Christmas, they generously gave over 1000 toys to Social Services for children in need, reflecting the church’s spirit of giving.

Exploring the sanctuary, I captured moments with the friendly congregation who graciously posed for pictures.

The worship team energized the atmosphere with a lively rendition of “Victory In Jesus.”

However, the most touching moment came when Cindy, courageously battling cancer and undergoing chemotherapy, delivered a moving solo of “Blessed Redeemer.”

Witnessing her strength and devotion to God brought tears to my eyes.

Geraldine followed with a powerful performance of “God On The Mountain,” prompting everyone to stand up in joyful praise.

The church’s mission, centered around sharing Jesus’ love, resonated throughout.

Tiffany, the Pastor’s daughter, shared a beautiful story about the love of her family and how she found the love of her life within this caring community.

Pastor Carlton Duck, facing and overcoming significant health challenges, including the loss of both legs, emerged as a symbol of strength and faith. Watching him stand on prosthetic legs, although still painful for him, and praise God, was so incredibly moving.

His message about finding blessings in adversity and placing trust in God struck a chord.

The sermon, titled “The Good King,” highlighted the greatness of Jesus and prompted profound reflection on my own faith. I LOVE how this church magnifies JESUS in all they do.

Post-service, the congregation gathered at the altar for a collective prayer.

The unity displayed during this moment, where everyone prayed for each other, including a child facing upcoming medical tests and for a newborns hearing, left a lasting impact on my heart.

Engaging with church members after the service revealed that what truly sets this church apart… is its PEOPLE—a tight-knit and compassionate family.
