2701 Campbell Avenue, Lynchburg VA
Today, as I continued my spiritual journey to explore every church in Lynchburg, I was led by the Holy Spirit to Fairview Christian Church, marking this visit as the 61st in my mission.
This experience at Fairview Christian Church was not just a visit, but a profound chapter filled with historical significance, heartfelt connections, and deep spiritual introspection—a day that will forever hold a special place in my heart.
I dedicated today’s visit to the loving memory of Jeanette Tyree, a dear encourager in my journey, who recently went home to be with the Lord. Fairview Christian Church was her spiritual home for many decades, making this visit even more meaningful.
I was also warmly invited by several members, including my friend Sharon, whose presence today added joy to the occasion.
Arriving a day early to capture photographs of the church, I noticed that the sermon would be on the “Theology of Annie,” immediately signaling that today was indeed a divinely appointed moment.
With an open heart and mind, I was ready to receive whatever message God had for me.
Upon stepping into the sanctuary, the atmosphere was vibrant with joy, warmth, and welcoming smiles.
Pastor Chris personally greeted me, offering not just a handshake but a heartfelt hug and conversation that made me feel instantly connected and valued.
The love and beautiful spirit in this church were palpable, as if God was embracing me, reassuring me that everything was going to be okay in my life.
The members of the congregation were eager to share their experiences and the special qualities of their church, including the pastoral leadership, the close-knit church family, and their community outreach efforts.
People ask me frequently some of my favorite aspects of visiting churches and of course I always answer Jesus and… potlucks. 🙂
Today, I was blessed to experience both.
The service beautifully blended traditional and contemporary elements, which I learned is a characteristic of the “Disciples of Christ” denomination, which was new to me but felt surprisingly like home to my heart.
Fairview Christian Church is wonderfully inclusive, extending a weekly community dinner every Tuesday to anyone interested, reflecting their open-hearted approach.
During the announcements, I learned about the church’s “30 Days of Prayer” initiative for July and a “Holy Hush” experience, which involves abstaining from all forms of negative speech—a practice I found profoundly inspiring.
Pastor Chris introduced the communion with deep reverence, inviting everyone to partake, and we were led in the hymn “In the Garden,” beautifully performed by the talented worship team. This was continued by a stirring rendition of “I Raise a Hallelujah,” lifting everyone’s spirits higher.
Today’s scripture reading from Psalm 130 spoke deeply to me, reminding me to patiently wait for the Lord.
Pastor Chris’s sermon was incredibly moving, ingeniously weaving themes from the musical “Annie” to illustrate that God’s favor is indeed for a lifetime including “tomorrow.”
He challenged us to ignite our faith in prayer and not to underestimate God’s healing power.
He described revival not just as a spiritual awakening but as a resurrection from spiritual lethargy, asking us, “What areas in our lives do we need God to awaken?”
Leaving Fairview Christian Church today, I was not only moved by the sermon but also by the authenticity and joy of its congregation.
The church’s commitment to real, applicable faith discussions, or “real talk,” as I would describe Pastor Chris’s preaching style, made the teachings all the more relatable and impactful.
