Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church

4660 Fort Avenue, Lynchburg

As the golden rays of another beautiful day stretched across the horizon, my heart brimmed with joy and anticipation on my 42nd birthday. This was yet another glorious day in my ongoing journey to explore the sacred spaces that dot my beloved city, a journey to visit every Christian church.

Little did I know that the moments I would encounter at Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church, my 66th stop, would be etched forever into my soul.

Upon arrival at Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church, I was immediately enveloped by a sense of warmth and hospitality.

A kind gentleman greeted me at the entrance and guided me to the Bible Study group led by Associate Pastor Erin Long.

Despite being a newcomer, I was welcomed with open arms and given a Bible study book to join in the day’s lesson.

The group was studying the theme of singing a new song for the Lord, exploring Psalm 96 and engaging in thought-provoking discussions. It was a heartening experience, and the fellowship was genuine and inclusive.

Stepping into the beautiful sanctuary, I was greeted by even more members of the congregation.

Hugs, smiles, and handshakes all around, making me feel right at home.

Although this is predominantly an older congregation, the church is vibrant and full of life. The members are just incredible, full of laughter and joy, embodying a community that recognizes the need for God’s Spirit and the mind of Christ.

Before the service began, Pastor Adam White greeted me with a warm hug and engaged in a heartfelt conversation. His genuine care and interest in my journey were deeply touching.

Pastor Erin Long, who had led the Bible study, continued to make me feel welcome and valued.

The service began with Pastor Adam leading us in praise and worship with hymns like “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty” and “Break Thou the Bread of Life.” His beautiful singing voice added a profound sense of reverence to the worship. Pastor Erin then led us in a Scripture lesson from John 6:24-35.

What stood out was the congregation’s joyful spirit; they greeted each other warmly and even joined together to sing “Happy Birthday” to me. My heart was overflowing with joy and love in that moment.

Pastor Adam delivered a powerful sermon titled “Bon Appetit,” which I felt was divinely meant for me on this special day.

With a perfect blend of humor and depth, he shared stories and analogies, including a memorable one about “Where’s Waldo?” He likened the challenge of finding Waldo amidst chaos to our struggles in finding Jesus in our busy lives.

This led to a poignant message about Christ being the bread of life and how our relationship with God nourishes our souls. Pastor Adam’s poetic delivery and heartfelt prayers touched everyone deeply.

We then shared our joys and concerns, praying for one another in the house of the Lord.

The sense of community and support was truly wonderful.

Sharing in communion was a particularly moving experience. Pastor Erin guided me through the process, where we came up to the front kneeling and partaking individually. This act of communion was a beautiful reminder of Christ’s presence and sacrifice.

What really stood out to me was the church’s encouragement to “scatter and serve” God and our neighbors. Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church actively supports local organizations, including Interfaith Outreach and Park View Missions, embodying their mission to live out their faith through service. They even had a collection area upon entering the church where members can contribute to those most vulnerable in our city.

This visit to Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church is one I will forever cherish. The love, warmth, and genuine care I experienced today were overwhelming. The congregation’s spirit and dedication to their faith is truly something I pray you get to be a part of.

With a heart full of anticipation, I look forward to where the Holy Spirit will lead me next.
