Hill City Reformed Baptist Church

5039 Boonsboro Road, Lynchburg VA

I found myself standing in the presence of God among the wonderful congregation of Hill City Reformed Baptist Church, marking the 110th church on this sacred pilgrimage to visit every church in our city.

Gathered together at James River Day School, this humble community shines brightly, revealing that a true church is not defined by bricks and mortar but by the love and sincere fellowship of its people.

From the moment I walked in, I was met with a remarkable outpouring of kindness. People warmly greeted me, extending hands and open hearts, eager to share their stories and listen to mine.

I felt an immediate sense of belonging as I spoke with two of the three dedicated elders of the church, each radiating warmth and genuine care. They shared about the heart of their ministry, rooted deeply in the Scriptures and bound together by faith.

As I talked with various members, I asked them, “What makes Hill City Reformed Baptist Church so special?”

The answers resonated deeply, echoing the very essence of Christian community. They spoke of the family-like bonds formed here, the commitment to biblically sound preaching, and the sincere atmosphere of love and compassion that permeates their gatherings.

Two young women shared sentiments that touched my heart profoundly… one saying Sunday mornings are her weekly “recharge,” and the other describing how this church had nurtured her faith from childhood, surrounding her with love and support.

Danielle, whose gentle spirit exemplifies the hospitality of this congregation, embodied the true meaning of Christ-like welcome. Her kindness reminded me of the significance of making each person feel seen, valued, and deeply loved.

The worship service was anchored by powerful expository preaching from Elder Brian, whose sermon was entitled “Three Prayers in a Garden,” drawn from the Matthew 26:36-46. We journeyed together into the intimate moments of Jesus in Gethsemane, moments marked by deep sorrow, heartfelt prayer, and profound submission to the Father’s will.

As Elder Brian eloquently unveiled these verses, we were reminded of Christ’s prayerful example during intense suffering. He highlighted the importance of surrendering to God’s will even when our circumstances are painful and overwhelming. The message powerfully spoke three key truths to my heart:

First, praying for the Father’s will means embracing difficult situations with faith, knowing that God’s plan surpasses our own limited understanding. Jesus, facing the agony of the cross, modeled a willingness to trust the Father fully, even in unimaginable suffering.

Second, praying according to the Father’s will demands selflessness. How often do we resist God’s direction because it costs us comfort or convenience? Jesus taught us in that garden to yield our desires, our fears, and our pains, placing them in the sovereign hands of our Heavenly Father.

Finally, Elder Brian reminded us how to sustain our resolve in prayer. He encouraged us not to grow weary but to persevere, finding strength in continued communion with God. Like Christ, who returned to prayer again and again in the garden, we too must continually seek the Father’s face, drawing strength and clarity from His presence.

As I reflected upon this powerful sermon, my heart overflowed with gratitude for how God continues to heal and transform me through this journey.

Each church I visit, each sermon I hear, each interaction I experience, is another piece of the healing God is carefully placing back into my broken heart. This community at Hill City Reformed Baptist Church has added another precious piece today, and for that, I am forever grateful.

I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to visit this warm, Christ-centered congregation, and experience firsthand the love, compassion, and biblical truth they share. My soul is strengthened by their example, my spirit is renewed by their kindness, and my heart is humbled by the continued goodness of God.

Thank you, Hill City Reformed Baptist Church, for welcoming me into your family today. As I continue this remarkable journey, I am reminded again and again of God’s grace and His steadfast love.

I eagerly await what He has in store next, confident that He who began a good work will be faithful to complete it.

May we all learn to surrender our lives, just as Jesus did, to the perfect will of our Heavenly Father, trusting Him fully in every garden we face.
