Shekijah Preparation Assembly

104 Fleetwood Drive, Lynchburg VA

On June 25, 2023, I had the privilege of attending Shekijah Preparation Assembly in Lynchburg as part of my journey to explore the city’s churches.

This blog post recounts my visit to Shekijah, where the warm reception, stunning sanctuary, and heartfelt worship left an impression that I will always carry with me.

Arriving almost an hour ahead of time, I took the opportunity to capture photos of the church’s exterior. Co-Pastor Sheree Sykes graciously greeted me and offered a guided tour of Shekijah before the service.

Her open arms, infectious smile, and warm hug instantly made me feel at home.

During the tour, I learned about the church’s history, dating back to its establishment in 1987.

The Sanctuary featured a captivating mural bearing the words, “This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes” (Psalm 118:23), reminding us of God’s wondrous work and how He is the reason we are gathered.

Exploring further, I discovered that Shekijah had a nursery for young children, a dedicated area for youth ministry, and a fellowship hall. They also have a photo backdrop close to the entrance to create beautiful photo memories for all families attending worship service.

The breathtaking Sanctuary required descending a few steps, serving as a humble reminder of approaching God’s presence with reverence and humbleness.

As I waited for the 11:00 a.m. service, I witnessed the dedicated efforts of the church members in setting up sound instruments and preparing for their online livestream.

The church’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment was evident as a gentleman attentively helped a person to the Sanctuary that needed assistance, demonstrating their care for those with specific needs or mobility challenges.

The atmosphere of joy and warmth permeated as worshippers gathered, embracing me with welcoming smiles and heartfelt hugs.

Knowing a few familiar faces in the congregation, such as James Harrington, a talented local real estate agent and musician, added to the sense of connection.

Sherell Smith, a beautiful lady, graciously invited me to join her in the front row, where her love and joy were contagious throughout the service. Sherell delivered a powerful prayer to start the service that moved me to tears.

The worship praise team, led by the dynamic Terence, stirred the congregation to shout praises, and dance for joy for the Lord. I was also impressed by the female drummer showcasing incredible skill.

Co-Pastor Sheree and Bishop Terence Sykes encouraged spirited praise and worship, displaying remarkable talent and humble devotion. I felt right at home and deeply loved. Both the Bishop and Co-Pastor are incredible singers!

The angelic voices of the choir enveloped the sanctuary, creating a heavenly sound. Watching the online service does not adequately do justice to being there in person.

Elder Edward Donogan delivered a powerful sermon based on Micah 6:8, reminding us of the Lord’s requirements: to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.

The entire service left an impression of authenticity and devotion. I will forever cherish the way Shekijah’s congregation embraced me with love and made me feel genuinely welcomed.

Their commitment to the mission statement, “To Know God and to Make Him Known,” was evident in their worship and fellowship.
