Fort Hill United Methodist Church

116 Oakridge Blvd. Lynchburg, VA

Today, my heart danced to the rhythm of faith as I stepped into the embrace of Fort Hill United Methodist Church, marking the 13th chapter in my journey of exploring every Christian church in my beloved city.

The air seemed to echo with a symphony of whispered prayers and resonant hymns, as I embarked on a soul-enriching experience that would touch my spirit in unexpected ways.

As I pulled into the parking lot, a friendly gentleman welcomed me with a radiant “Good Morning” and a genuine smile that warmed my heart.

It was a simple gesture, but in that moment, it felt like the church itself was embracing me.

Stepping onto the grounds, I couldn’t help but notice the well-kept playground—a testament to the church’s commitment to nurturing the young spirits within the community.

The blessing box stood as a silent sentinel, offering sustenance to those who needed it most. I was moved by the realization that this church wasn’t just a place of worship; it was a beacon of hope, extending its hand to the hungry and the needy.

Inside, the sanctuary exuded an aura of serenity.

The stunning stained glass windows seemed to emenate the stories of generations past.

Reverend Marc Brown, a figure whose name carried the weight of love and devotion, approached me with a warmth that made me feel like an old friend.

His wife, Beverly Brown, a reflection of grace and the Sunday School teacher, extended her welcome, wrapping me in a sense of belonging.

The Holy Spirit’s gentle nudge that led me to Fort Hill United Methodist Church was undeniable.

It was as if unseen hands were guiding me to this exact moment, where the embrace of this faith community felt like exactly what I needed today.

Every interaction, every smile, resonated with authenticity.

Liturgist Bob Doney’s warm welcome was accompanied by the offer of his church bulletin, a simple yet profound gesture that invited me to journey alongside the congregation.

And then, the sight of children being brought to the front of the church to hear a message they could easily understand before the sermon spoke volumes about this community’s dedication to nurturing young hearts.

Jacob, the worship team leader, orchestrated a symphony of worship, effortlessly shifting from piano to organ to guitar, his voice blending harmoniously with the choir’s angelic tones. The hymns selected for the service were beautiful. I appreciated that they also provided the lyrics on screens for easier reading.

In the midst of the congregation, a kind woman named Carolyn introduced me to the members of this faith family. Her actions spoke of a community that was intentional in fostering connections.

Reverend Marc Brown’s prayer before his sermon set the stage for a message that would echo in my heart.

His sermon on Mark 14, seen through the lens of the storms Jesus faced, rather than the disciples’ perspective, held a revelation that I had not heard before.

I knew that this was a message destined for my ears, a truth that I needed to grasp.

To every person at Fort Hill United Methodist Church, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. Your warm smiles, your friendly greetings, your outstretched hands—these are gestures that I will carry with me. Your church isn’t just a building; it’s a haven of love, a place where faith is lived out through actions and embraces.

  1. I go to the UMC in Uniontown OH. I love your blog! I have been to the UMC in Roanoke where my Aunt used to go. My first best friend from second grade is a veterinarian in Lynchburg. Next time I come down I will look for you at the church you are visiting. I bought 4 of your books to give to my grandkids and great niece and nephews! May you be richly blessed in all things!
