Embarking on this remarkable journey to explore every Christian church in our beloved city, I had the privilege of stepping into the heartwarming embrace of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, located right in the heart of the Historic Daniel’s Hill District. This visit marked my 24th stop on this spiritual odyssey, and oh, what a special visit it was!
Today, our souls were graced by a unique celebration, the 72nd Missionary Anniversary.
An invitation extended by the gracious Evelyn Dickey White led us to this sanctified gathering, where Elder Flora Cardwell, the First Lady of Diamond Hill Baptist Church, bestowed upon us the divine message this morning.
Mount Carmel Baptist Church, as lovingly described by Evelyn, is a place where “everybody is somebody, and every visitor is an honored guest.”
From the moment we crossed the threshold, this sentiment wrapped around us like a warm, comforting blanket of love.
As the service commenced, the congregation spontaneously erupted into a beautiful acapella rendition of “Blessed Assurance.”
The voices of those gathered created a wonderful harmony that resonated deeply within our souls. Testimonies and prayers flowed freely, each one a heartfelt testament to the profound impact of the Lord’s blessings.
The Men’s Choir graced us with their melodious praise, singing “I Just Can’t Make It By Myself” and “I’m On The Battlefield For My Lord.” Their voices carried us on a spiritual journey this morning.
What struck me most was the absence of flashy screens, QR codes, or modern distractions. Instead, we found ourselves in a sanctuary that embodied the essence of humble worship and profound praise.
Though Reverend Dr. James W. Cobbs, Jr. did not deliver a sermon, his acapella solo of “Only What You Do For Christ Will Last” resonated through the sanctuary. Although I didn’t have the opportunity to speak with him personally, it was clear that he is cherished by this congregation.
The service included a poignant tribute to many remarkable women, both present and past, who have graced this congregation with their presence. Each name listed in the church bulletin was accompanied by a beautiful bouquet of flowers, a token of deep appreciation.
As the prayer was spoken over the offering, it was accompanied by a special supplication for those who, in this season of life, were unable to give.
Many members rose to their feet, welcoming newcomers and sharing heartwarming tales of their cherished memories within these sacred walls. One beautiful lady spoke of how Mount Carmel Baptist Church had played an integral role in raising her children.
It was evident that we were part of a sacred family today, woven together by a shared history and love for the Lord.
The beauty of this church lies in its openness to share prayers, words of encouragement, and personal testimonies. Evelyn, the speaker introducing the featured guest, not only performed this duty with grace but also moved our hearts with a powerful testimony of how the Lord had restored her vision.
Her rendition of “You Can’t Make Me Doubt Him,” her personal favorite, resonated with profound faith and gratitude.
Among the many musical gems of the day, the Men’s Group’s performance of “Have A Little Talk With Jesus” was the crown jewel. It had the entire congregation toe-tapping and hand-clapping, a jubilant testament to the joyous spirit that inhabits this sacred space.
Elder Flora Cardwell, the pinnacle of today’s service, delivered a sermon that touched the depths of our souls. Titled “In The Middle,” she guided us on a spiritual journey, reminding us that Jesus is ever-present in the midst of our lives.
She emphasized the importance of making time with God a priority, infusing our praise with the fervor it deserves. Elder Flora taught us the transformative power of worship and praise, and taught us essentially how we should praise God according to the Bible.
The Holy Spirit moved through the service, touching each of us in profound ways.
In the welcoming embrace of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, it’s certain that you will feel cherished and loved. I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to this sacred place, and I pray that your experience is as rich and soul-stirring as the one I had today.
