1132 Sandusky Drive, Lynchburg VA
Embarking on a mission to immerse myself in the spiritual landscape of Lynchburg, my journey, divinely guided by the Holy Spirit, brought me to the doors of Fort Avenue Church of Christ.
This visit marked a significant chapter in my spiritual exploration, as it was the 42nd church I’ve had the privilege to step into.
With anticipation and a heart open to new experiences, my daughter and I arrived early, eager to capture the serene beauty of the church in the quiet moments before the congregation gathered.
Upon entering the sanctuary, a space filled with overwhelming peace, we were greeted with warmth and genuine kindness by Youth Minister, Terrence Fleming.
Terrence, a young minister beaming with passion and dedication to serving the Lord, graciously sat with us.
He shared insights into the Church of Christ’s mission and his personal journey to Lynchburg. It was incredibly inspiring to meet someone so young (only 28 years old), yet so deeply committed to the path of service and spiritual leadership.
One of the first things we noticed was the absence of any musical instruments within the sanctuary…
Terrence explained that worship here is a heartfelt offering of acapella singing, a tradition that emphasizes the purity and sincerity of congregational praise.
This approach to worship, he elaborated, reflects the church’s dedication to adhering closely to the Scriptures, seeking to live out their faith without adding to or subtracting from the Bible’s teachings.
Terrence’s willingness to share and explain these aspects of his church’s practice was both enlightening and deeply appreciated.
As the congregation began to arrive, we were introduced to Minister Lee Cannon.
His handshake was firm, his welcome warm, and his invitation to engage with the church community was open-hearted!
His wife’s invitation to a “Third Sunday” potluck meal exemplified the church’s culture of fellowship and community.
The congregation’s warm hugs, handshakes, and genuine smiles made us feel not just welcome but truly a part of their family, enveloped in a beautiful expression of Christ’s love.
The worship, led by the song leader Grant Beasley, whose voice was both powerful and gentle, invited us into a profound experience of praise.
Singing hymns like “Have You Seen Jesus, My Lord?”, “He Is Able”, and a vibrant rendition of “He Gave Me A Song”, we were swept up in the beauty of acapella worship, filling the church with a harmony that echoed the unity and spirit of the congregation.
A moment that touched my heart deeply was when Steve Allen led us in prayer, inviting members to share their prayer requests.
A teacher’s plea for prayers for a former student battling for their life was a poignant reminder of the power and necessity of prayer, the communal support for those in struggle, and the profound impact of interceding on behalf of others.
Terrence’s communion message was thoughtful and inclusive, offering both wine and grape juice, respecting individual choices and convictions.
Minister Lee Cannon’s sermon, “How Love Handles The Scary Things”, was not only thought-provoking but delivered with a humor that made the profound truths he shared all the more accessible and impactful.
His reflections on repentance, drawing from Luke Chapter 19:1, were skillfully tied to contemporary life, reminding us of the timeless relevance of Scripture.
Ending the service with a group photo was a beautiful way to commemorate our visit, capturing a moment of fellowship and shared faith.
My experience at Fort Avenue Church of Christ was a blessing, a reminder of the diverse ways in which communities of faith worship and live out the gospel.
