Holy Cross Catholic Church

710 Clay Street, Lynchburg VA

Today was a beautiful day in my spiritual journey as I had the privilege of visiting Holy Cross Catholic Church, marking it as the 45th stop on my journey to explore every church in our city under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The experience at Holy Cross was profoundly enriching and enlightening, offering me a glimpse into Catholic worship and tradition.

As I entered the sacred space of Holy Cross, I was immediately swept up in the solemnity and reverence of the Palm Sunday service.

Unlike the usual setting, the service commenced in the commons, this added a unique and poignant touch to the day’s proceedings.

Together with the congregation, we carried palm branches while the worship team (which included my friend and local author, Heather) serenaded us with the hymn “Hosanna,” filling the air with praises and adoration.

It was a deeply moving experience to participate in this symbolic reenactment of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

Holy Cross Parish stands as an enduring legacy of Catholicism in our community. Its roots can be traced back to 1829 when the seeds of Catholic worship were first sown by Father Cooper in the home of Mrs. William Dornin.

Over the years, the parish has evolved and flourished under the guidance of dedicated priests and leaders, each leaving their mark on its history and development.

The warm embrace of the Holy Cross community was appreciated from the moment I stepped through its doors.

Despite being a newcomer, I was greeted with open arms and genuine hospitality by members like William Herbert, whose friendly demeanor instantly put me at ease. Kaky, with her kindness and patience, she took the time to explain what to expect during the service, ensuring that I felt included.

My daughter found a familiar face in the crowded sanctuary… her friend Kelsey, invited us to sit with her family today, as they are members of Holy Cross.

As I mingled with the congregation, I encountered a young lady, McKayla, who shared insights into the church’s rich traditions and doctrinal alignment with what she is looking for in a church. Her words resonated deeply with me, affirming the sense of belonging and spiritual fulfillment that many members cherish at Holy Cross.

Father Sal eloquently conveyed the significance of Palm Sunday and the journey of Holy Week. Moments of sacred silence punctuated the readings, allowing for deep reflection and contemplation. The entire church knelt in silent prayer as we read about Jesus’ sacrifice.

One particularly touching moment came during communion, where my daughter and I, though not Catholic, were welcomed to receive a blessing.

It was a gesture of inclusivity that exemplified the spirit of openness and acceptance at Holy Cross.

As I reflect on my experience at Holy Cross, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to witness the richness of Catholic worship and community.

The parish’s commitment to its mission of inviting all to encounter Jesus Christ through worship, community, and service is evident in every aspect of its ministry.
