1030 McConville Road #10, Lynchburg VA
On October 13th, 2024, I had the joy and privilege of visiting Discover Church in Lynchburg as part of my ongoing mission to visit every Christian church in my city, guided by the Holy Spirit.
Discover Church, known for its focus on the power of God’s Word and genuine love for its community, became the 76th stop on this extraordinary journey of faith and healing.
Discover Church has a simple yet profound mission: to teach, equip, and empower God’s people with the faithful, verse-by-verse teaching of Scripture.
The members here hold a firm belief that the teaching of God’s Word is the highest form of worship. They believe it is through the Holy Spirit and the clear teaching of Scripture that lives are truly transformed.
I was deeply moved by the passion the congregation had for Scripture, and it was clear that their dedication to studying the Word was at the heart of everything they did.
When I asked several members what makes Discover Church unique, the answer was nearly unanimous: the people feel like family. But the other thing that stood out was the emphasis on Pastor Darren’s expository preaching, which is built entirely on Scripture.
The message is drawn directly from the Bible, with careful interpretation to make sure that God’s original intent is conveyed to the congregation.
As soon as my daughter and I walked through the doors, we were greeted with warm smiles and open hearts. The atmosphere was filled with love, joy, and a sense of belonging that wrapped around us like a hug.
It wasn’t just a church we were walking into…it felt like a family gathering, where everyone was excited to welcome us and share in the experience of worship.
Seeing the children run around, full of joy and laughter, added to the lively atmosphere. It was clear that this was a community that celebrates life together, and the love they share for one another radiated throughout the entire room.
One of the most unexpected blessings of the morning was meeting Pastor Darren. Even though he was supposed to be on vacation in Florida, he was here because of the storm, and I was fortunate enough to have a heartfelt conversation with him.
We talked about my journey to visit every Christian church in the city, and he shared more about the vision of Discover Church. It was evident that he is deeply passionate about leading his congregation to a deeper understanding of God’s Word.
Pastor Darren’s kindness and authenticity made our conversation feel like we had known each other for years.
His dedication to expository preaching, where the message is pulled directly from Scripture and explained in its original context, is something that the members greatly appreciate.
Many shared with me that they have grown tremendously in their faith through this style of teaching, as it encourages them to study Scripture in a deeper way.
Worship at Discover Church was a deeply moving experience.
The congregation sang with such enthusiasm and love for the Lord, it was contagious.
I particularly loved the upbeat praise of “What A Savior,” which had everyone lifting their voices in praise. But it was the beautiful song “I Have a Shelter” that truly touched my heart, bringing tears to my eyes as we sang together, knowing that we have a place of refuge in Jesus Christ.
The joy of worship didn’t stop with just the music.
Discover Church celebrates its members in such a special way, acknowledging birthdays, anniversaries, and other milestones during the service. They even have a tradition of providing meal trains for families in need, showing how deeply they care for one another. The love and care in this church extend beyond the walls of the sanctuary and into the everyday lives of the people who call it home.
Today’s sermon was delivered by Elder Dave, who walked us through John Chapter 2:15-17. The message focused on the five characteristics of being a true believer: obedience, Christ-likeness, love, growth, and separation from worldly values. Elder Dave’s teaching was clear and thought-provoking, challenging us to examine our own lives and ask whether we are truly living in obedience to God’s Word.
He reminded us that being a true believer goes far beyond attending church; it is about showing the love of Jesus in our daily lives.
It was a convicting yet encouraging message, reminding us all that as Christians, we are called to stand apart from the world and be reflections of Christ’s light.
After the sermon, a young girl approached my daughter who joyfully waved and smiled and commented on her Strawberry Shortcake sweater, it was a truly heartwarming moment.
One more thing that truly stood out to me was the deep sense of community and care that Discover Church has for its members.
Every Sunday, a member of the congregation cooks lunch for the entire church, further telling me that this is a place where people share not just in worship, but in life together.
While we weren’t able to stay for the spaghetti and salad lunch today, it looked absolutely delicious as we were heading out.
It’s little traditions like this that make Discover Church feel more like a home than just a place to worship.
The love and care that flow through this congregation were evident in everything they did, from the way they welcomed us as visitors to the thoughtful conversations shared after the service.
My visit to Discover Church was a true blessing, and I left feeling encouraged, loved, and uplifted. Discover Church is not just a building…it’s a home where people grow in their faith, care for one another, and seek to live lives that honor Jesus.
I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to visit Discover Church. Whether you’re new to the faith, a seasoned believer, or just looking for a place to feel truly loved and accepted, this is a church where you will find exactly that.
It’s a place where the Word of God is taught faithfully, and the love of God is experienced fully.

As I continue on this journey to visit every Christian church in my city, I am filled with gratitude for the healing and revelations that each visit brings.
I can’t wait to see where the Holy Spirit leads me next, and I trust that with each step, God is drawing me closer to Him and to His people.
